The woman was then brought to a police station and given a blouse to cover up her nudity. Werner was also kept in a dimly lit cell with handcuffs and was not allowed to communicate with her family or attorney. Although the Brazilian model had previously shown off her nude body, this was the first time she had ever been arrested for it. She committed an offensive act and was called in.
There is a provision in the Brazilian constitution about engaging in lewd behavior in public. The act could result in a three-month to one-year jail sentence. Caroline criticized the Brazilian court system after her release, branding them patriarchal supporters. She detested the harsh patriarchal rules that the institution used to control female bodies.
Is Werner correct to demand that he be granted the same freedoms as men to be naked in public? Should she be punished instead for questioning the expectations society places on women’s bodies and attire? As Caroline Werner waits for her upcoming court appearance, questions are raised.
